The origins of Gangi between history and legend

Looking at the beautiful surrounding countryside there is a mountain in the shape of sfince, Mount Alburchia. Li where it all began, where the Cretans, around 1200 BC, founded Engyon (Gangi) and the Temple of the Mother Goddesses. It is believed that the temple guard even today, the auction and the crests of the Cretan Meriones, grandson of Minos; weapons of Ulysses; armor and shields of Scipione Africanus.

It sided with Carthage at the time of the Punic Wars and due to that the temple was stripped of some of its treasures, and this episode will be remembered by Cicerone in his "verrine."

The history tells us that in 1195 Gangi (already then on Mount Marone) belongs to the county of Geraci.

It is thought that in the time of the Angevins, the engini are on their side and when defeated the Count of Geraci totally destroyed the town and ordered the inhabitants to go to build elsewhere another city. From here the history on Monte Marone.
